The trip through Dixon Long Point was
tragically missed by the entire 4wd Club, with the exception of a select band of
hardy travellers. Richard Pugh and Sharyn Martin, my wife and I, Colin and
Stella Crowther, David and Sandie Parlour, Gary and Wendy Williams, Peter,
Margaret and Paul Morgan and the legendary Clouts showed remarkable insight,
wisdom and faith by undertaking the Power tour.
A great many highlights emerged
throughout the trip which won't be recounted here, but certain occurrences
cannot be ignored. Most of the touring party faithfully followed Steve’s G.P.S.
to a late night campsite, which was able to evade us if only for a short time.
After a cold night, the Morgans' and Williams' arrived and our exploration
began. By the time we arrived at our Saturday camp sight we had seen some great
stuff including the tiny townships of Sofala and Hill End. Two main priorities
emerged once camp had been made, some of us felt that a good supply of firewood
was needed, due to the already fast dropping temperatures, whilst others
(Richard and Steve) believed that wetting a line in the river should top the
billing. Firewood wasn't hard to find and along the way young Paul shared with
me some of his budding driving skills, we returned in time to see Steve headed
for the river to retrieve his wayward lure from the icy depths. That night, an
excellent campfire was enjoyed by all. before lights out after which the
temperature plummeted to -7 degrees. The next day we broke camp and followed
Snoopy the Troopie through even more spectacular country, stopping at the
Macquarie River (Dixon’s Long Point) for lunch and eventually driving through
Orange and Bathurst (including a slow lap of the race track), then continuing
east through Lithgow and home. Many miles for one weekend admittedly, but very
much worth the effort.
Most of the people that took this trip
I have had the good fortune of knowing quite well and others I got to meet
during the trip, which got me thinking that the people is what makes the trip
great. So here, in order of convoy, is my analysis of the Dixon Long Point trip.
- Steve
Power -Undisputed heavyweight champ of
pebble skimming in the club (if you think your pretty good your dreaming),
thinks political correctness is an ailment.
- Katya Power -Undisputed
heavyweight champ of being nice (if you know someone nice she can out nice
them}, predestined before time to bring balance to Steve
- Richard Pugh -capable
of driving feats beyond mortal men limited only by skill and. Sharyn
Martin -probably the only woman alive intelligent enough to manipulate
Richards mind
- into some degree of compliance and sanity .
- Mick Heinke -outrageously
talented and good-looking legend.
- Kim Heinke -able
stop her own heartbeat at the hint of an interesting sidetrack
- Colin Crowther -budding
inspector gadget, I expect him to have more gizmos than SP. or DP .
within months.
- Stella Crowther- owner
of an amazing collection of jumpers, beanies and scarves.
- David Parlour -no
longer able to afford to run a petrol cruiser having bought a brand new
diesel Sandie Parlour -victim of a terrible phobia (Hoffnaphobia)
relating to setting up camp in the dark
- Garry
Williams -not ashamed to be a petrol prado
owner, can handle a footy for a soccer player . Wendy Williams -cuts
a mean Christmas carol harmony.
- Peter
Morgan -wears shorts at -7 degrees, says
it isn't cold and means it, not bad with a footy either.
- Margaret
Morgan -able to organise the most raucous
bunch into time for a chrissy carol, usually an excellent parent but allows
very bad influences to give guidance to her offspring.
- Paul Morgan -has
a car called muffy, would like to try surfing but doesn't like the beach.
- Dave Clout -a
hardcore approach to his offroading, knows how to set up a vehicle but
complains about paint colour?
- Kerry Clout -usually,
can get running water with the touch of a button, knows how to get mileage
out of a broken collarbone.
So there it is Dixon Long Point at a
glance, if you had gone most of this would make a lot more sense and you would
know what a great trip it was.
