Beef Casserole

What do you need
700gm
lean braising steak, cut into bite sized pieces
3 rashers of streaky bacon, chopped
175gms onions, sliced
175gm mushrooms, quartered
1
tablespoon oil
230gm can tomatoes
2 garlic cloves, crushed
pinch dried mixed herbs
100ml beef stock
1 tablespoon plain flour
100ml red wine
50gm
butter
1
teaspoon mustard
6-8 slices french bread, cut diagonally, about 1 cm thick
How to do it
Heat the oil in a heavy based pan or camp oven.
Add the onions and mushrooms and cook for about five minutes until just tender
Then add the beef, bacon, tomatoes, garlic, herbs and stock.
Cover and cook for about 1 hour stirring once, until the beef is tender.
Mix the flour with the wine, then stir into the casserole, stirring until thickened.
Mix the butter and mustard and spread over the slices of French bread.
Arrange these in a layer on top of the casserole, put the lid on
Return to the coals for about five minutes. then serve.
