4WD History

Crikey, what a couple of weeks.

I finished the installation of drawers etc, tested everything & then went to my local shopping centre to buy some groceries & thought that I may as well use the fridge to keep the cold goods cold & you wouldn't read about it, when I returned to the vehicle, I had a flat battery.

Oh well I thought, I had some battery problems a while back, so I thought it must be just a battery problem, so bought a new battery & that got me home.

Well to cut a long story short, a few days later I went to use the vehicle & another flat battery, so I managed to get it jump started from my power pack & then drove it down the road & back, keeping a close watch on the volt meter.

Well the volt meter was not showing happy readings. With the lights on low beam & no other accessories on, I had about 8 volts. The reason I had not noticed before is I had not been driving at night & therefore the volts looked semi normal at close to 12.

So off I went to find a good auto electrician. I told him my dilemna & that I had a trip to Mt Airlie coming up & needed it fixed ASAP. He said that as it is a grey import, he is not sure if he will have the parts & that if I wanted to save a few hours labour costs, I should do the removal & refit myself.

Well it wasn't that I was in great need to save the money, but thought to myself, that if I can't do it in a controlled environment (my workshop), then the chances are, I won't be able to do it in the scrub if I ever have to, so I took up the challenge & a few days later, managed to get it safely removed.

Below are some pictures of it all going back together, as I decided against taking them as it came apart, due to not being sure if I was on the right track.

This pic is the alternator being remounted with a ratchet on the illusive bottom bolt. To get at this, the air conditioner compressor & the air filter assemble needed to be removed.

This of the air conditioner compressor & the mounts associated with it being put back in place.

Of course, the advantage of removing all of the belts, is that I get to retension them & check them when putting it all back together.

As a part of removing the air cleaner assembly, I had to disconnect the snorkel.

Then I had to reattatch the aircleaner assembly to the turbo

All complete, ready for a run.
